We have now spent considerable time in compiling relatively comprehensive data on genocide of Shia Muslims in Pakistan since 1963. We have chosen 1963 as our starting point because before that year, no significant incident of anti-Shia violence has been reported in the media.
The Shia Muslims of Pakistan have been relentlessly attacked in various ways by the Deobandi Jihadist proxies of the military state that were bred and raised during the 1980s. While the first major incident of the massacre of Shias in Pakistan took place in 1963 in Therhi, Khairpur, these killings started to receive state patronage and took the form of the present systemic killings only during and after General Zia-ul-Haq regime (1977-1988).
Since late 1980s, Shias belonging to all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds have been targeted and killed in every possible way, at every possible place and area in Pakistan. In almost all incidents, Shias (as well as Sunni Barelvis, Ahmadis, Christians etc) have been killed by Takfiri Deobandi militants of Sipah Sahaba and Taliban.
Religious scholars, doctors, lawyers, educationists, government officials, other professionals, shopkeepers, vendors and students, all have been targeted in one way or the other for the mere reason of them being Shia.
Shias have been attacked in religious processions, they have been dragged off the buses and slaughtered, they have been targeted on their way to pilgrimage, they have been subject to attacks on their way to schools or workplaces, they have been gunned down while offering prayers and they have been attacked while performing their regular daily business. They have been killed in all parts of the country from Parachinar to Karachi and Balochistan to Gilgit-Baltistan.
Let Us Build Pakistan (LUBP) has created a database of all the victims of this religious terrorism carried out by the Takfiri Deobandi terrorists, funded by Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, and supported by the Pakistani state, in what can now be called the slow-motion genocide of Shias in Pakistan. This database is not exhaustive but presents a chronological pattern of the atrocities committed against the Shias of Pakistan.

It is acknowledged that due to paucity of resources and lack of communication networks in many areas, not all incidents of Deobandi attacks on Shia Muslims have been recorded in this report.
- Particularly, we don’t have complete data on Shia killings in Parachinar and other areas in FATA where thousands of Shias have been slaughtered during the Saudi-CIA-ISI sponsored Afghan Jihad and in recent decades.
- Prior to January 2012, we have not included hundreds of reported and unreported incidents of target killing which involved death of only one Shia person.
- Also, we have not included those indiscriminate deaths in which Shias were a part of the ordinary population (in Pakistani markets, streets etc) killed by the ASWJ-Taliban. According to official statements, since Sept. 11, 2001, Pakistan has lost at least 6,344 security personnel and 37,674 civilians (Source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/pakistans-thriving-democracy-and-grievous-sacrifices/2012/07/22/gJQAmGtz2W_story.html). Many security personnel and civilians have been particularly massacred because of their allegiance to Shia sect of Islam. For example, in January 2008, Taliban over ran a post Paksitan army (Frontier Constabulary) abducting many soldiers. Later, they segregated Shia soldiers and killed them after brutal torture. The dead included eight Shia FC personnel, whom the militants killed by slitting their throats. Several such incidents have been monitored by Shia activists which remain unreported or censored in Pakistani media. Out of the total 44,000 civilians and security personnel killed so far (Sep 2001 – Jul 2012), Shias represent at least one fifth (20 %), i.e., about 10000 people, taking into account cases of segregation of Shias from Sunnis.
- Add this up to the list of 5000 Shia deaths recorded in the following list (spreadsheet) and add another 6000 in previous years which we have not included in this list or which remain unreported or unrecorded, the total death toll for Pakistan’s Shias at the hands of the Taliban, ASWJ and allied terrorists is about 20,000.
If the systematic murder of 20,000 of a particular faith group in a country is not a slow motion genocide, what else is it?
According to an estimate, at least 30 per cent of the total Shias killed are children or minors (age 18 or below). This makes their number at least 6,000 children. http://criticalppp.com/archives/231236
Overall, we have taken utmost care in presenting an honest and objective picture of attacks on Shias in Pakistan in the following list.
We hope that rights activists, including Shia, Sunni, non-Muslim and other rights activists, human rights groups and media organizations will use this report as a model for compiling and publishing consolidated data on the silent genocide of Shia Muslims currently taking place in Pakistan. We also hope that Pakistani as well as international media persons will break their silence on Shia genocide in Pakistan and pressurize Pakistan government, particularly Pakistan’s military establishment, to refrain from supporting the Deobandi militant organizations (Sipah Sahaba and Taliban) which are killing Shia Muslims.
It must be noted that those Takfiri Deobandi terrorists who are killing Shias are also killing moderate Sunnnis including Sunni Barelvis and moderate Doebandis and Salafist. Majority of Pakistani Sunnis have rejected terrorists of ASWJ-LeJ-Taliban who are killing Shias, moderate Sunnis, Ahmadis, Christians and other persecuted groups. It’s, therefore, inaccurate and dishonest to present Shia genocide as a Sunni vs Shia sectarian issue. The scale and intensity of target killing of Shias due to their faith remains highest; Shias remain the most target killed community in Pakistan. Shias are being killed by State-sponsored Deobandi militants, not by Sunnis.
Given that Shias of all ethnic backgrounds are being killed by Jihadi-sectarian groups (LeJ, ASWJ, Taliban), it is dishonest to misrepresent Shia genocide as an ethnic (e.g., Hazara specific) issue.
The LUBP team will welcome any corrections/insertions from the readers on incidents this database has missed out so that we are able to make this list exhaustive.

Note: From 1 Jan 2012, all data on Shia genocide in Pakistan are being compiled. Prior to that date we have recorded only major attacks (killings of 2 or more persons) or high profile murders in this databse.

But then, sectarian violence spread to the whole of Pakistan, first in the Northern Areas and the NWFP, then in Sindh, causing 1850 dead in total (Abbas, 2001: 24). In Karachi alone, 293 people died between 1994 and June 2002, of whom approximately 200 were Shias (HRCP, 2002: 7). The sectarian violence peaked in Karachi in 1994-95 as 103 Shias and 28 Sunnis died during this period (ibid.). Since 1997, a new feature of Shia genocide appeared with indiscriminate gunfire on ordinary citizens not involved in sectarian activity, targeting doctors, lawyers and traders (Abou-Zahab, 2002: 78). Finally, in the post September 11, 2001 context, suicide bombing tends to become the dominant pattern of anti-Shia violence.

It has been alleged by certain quarters that the present data is fictitious. Another attempt to denial by usual suspects.

1. SATP provides detailed data only from 2010 onwards. Prior to that there are only figures with no details of incidents or murders.
2. SATP data does not identify the victims by their faith.
3. SATP data is only based on newspaper reports. Many incidents are not reported in newspapers. Refer to the shaheed foundation, Shia Killing and other web sites and compare with newspapers. Many incidents, particularly those involving murder of one or two Shias, are omitted/not reported.
4. LUBP data is much more comprehensive, includes almost all the incidents cited by SATP (2010-12); and also includes those not published in the mainstream media.
2012 reported figure for 6 months is about 300-400 (HRCP, HRW etc). This is equal to approximately 700 per year at least. Multiply it with 50 years (1963-2013), you will get a figure of around 35,000.
This is what I wrote in the above post:
It is acknowledged that due to paucity of resources and lack of communication networks in many areas, not all incidents of Jihadi-sectarian attacks on Shia Muslims have been recorded in this report. Particularly, we don’t have complete data on Shia killings in Parachinar and other areas in FATA where thousands of Shias have been slaughtered during the so called Afghan Jihad and in recent decades. Piror to January 2012, we have not included hundreds of reported and unreported incidents of target killing which involved death of only one Shia person. Also, we have not included those deaths in which Shias were a part of the ordinary population (in Pakistani markets, streets etc) killed by the ASWJ-Taliban. According to official statements, since Sept. 11, 2001, Pakistan has lost at least 6,344 security personnel and 37,674 civilians (Source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/pakistans-thriving-democracy-and-grievous-sacrifices/2012/07/22/gJQAmGtz2W_story.html). Many security personnel and civilians have been particularly massacred because of their allegiance to Shia sect of Islam. For example, in January 2008, Taliban over ran a post Paksitan army (Frontier Constabulary) abducting many soldiers. Later, they segregated Shia soldiers and killed them after brutal torture. The dead included eight Shia FC personnel, whom the militants killed by slitting their throats. Several such incidents have been monitored by Shia activists which remain unreported or censored in Pakistani media. Out of the total 44,000 civilians and security personnel killed so far (Sep 2001 – Jul 2012), Shias represent at least one fifth (20 %), i.e., about 9000 people. Add this up to the list of 5000 Shia deaths recorded in the following list and add another 5000 which remain unreported or unrecorded, the total death toll for Pakistan’s Shias at the hands of the Taliban, ASWJ and allied terrorists is about 19,000.
If the systematic murder of 19,000 of a particular faith group in a country is not a slow motion genocide, what else is it?
